FAQ

Q1: How does the material grade affect long-term performance in corrosive environments?

A1: The main difference between 304 and 316L in valve applications is molybdenum content. 316L contains about 2-3% molybdenum, which improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting. In marine atmospheres or brackish water applications, 316L typically shows slower corrosion progression than 304. Without molybdenum, 304 relies entirely on its chromium oxide layer, which can break down in sustained chloride exposure above 60°C. For indoor piping with neutral fluids and no chlorides, 304 performs adequately and costs less.

Q2: What limitations should be expected when the valve undergoes frequent temperature changes?

A2: Standard packed valves use compression packing around the stem. When temperature cycles between ambient and 150°C+, the stem expands and contracts. Over time, this movement can gradually reduce packing compression, sometimes leading to minor stem leakage. This is not unique to any particular valve make-it is a known characteristic of packed valves in thermal cycling service. Some applications address this by specifying bellows seals or live-loaded packing arrangements, depending on how often the cycling occurs and whether emissions control is required.
